A quality grinder grinds herb to a fine consistency, a consistency that is impossible to get through traditional methods. Evenly crushed herbs burns out smoothly and provides a perfect smoking experience. Even though grinders do not need frequent cleaning, keeping it clean is important for a consistently enjoyable smoking experience. Otherwise leftover herbs can get stuck and clog the screen. Cleaning ensure that the piece stays operational and does not stick during the grinding process.
This cleaning process, in other words, is actually collection process as well. As cleaning involves collecting herb matter that has built up on the teeth and the screen. Collecting this reusable residue and removal of debris ensure proper functioning of herb grinders. There are different types of grinders out there like 2 piece, 3 piece and 4 pieces but the cleaning process is more or less same for all.
No matter the kind of grinder you are using, obviously the first thing to do is to take apart your grinder parts and clean them one by one. If you are using a metallic grinder, add the parts to the freezer for about twenty minutes. Cooling the pieces simplifies the cleaning process. The hardened resin separates easily when you start scraping away at the teeth and flat surfaces. Tap out as much herb particles as possible onto a piece of paper or a tray. There will be some bits stuck in the grooves and the screen as well as in the teeth of your grinder. Clean them with small brush heads such as a paint brush. Scrape off the remnants onto a container and save it in order to re-use later.
The best thing to use to clean your grinder and make it like brand new is isopropyl alcohol. It will break through all the super thick debris which is stuck around the edges and in the teeth. If your grinder is awfully caked, this might be the only way to continue using it. Soak it in ISO alcohol for a few minutes; then wipe it down with a towel. All the pieces of the grinder should be submerged in the solution and should be allowed to soak for around 20 minutes. Use a cotton swab in alcohol to clean the inside of your grinder if required. If yours is an acrylic or plastic grinder, it is better to use solution of hot water and dish detergent, since alcohol may damage some plastics.
Finally thoroughly Rinse off the pieces with lukewarm water. Then place them on dry paper towels or a dish rag in order to air dry. Make sure that your grinder is completely dry before using it again. Cleaning is a hassle and most of the time the thought of cleaning a grinder is the last thing on people’s minds. But spending a little bit of your time removing out excess herb from the crusher is always worthy.
